Nowadays, lots of things are happening in Toronto. In the midst of the rare earthquake that rocked the city, one of the more prominent things affecting Toronto is the G20 Summit. With protestors being arrested, leaders making big decisions, damage being done to the city, and its expensive nature in general, the G8/G20 has been quite stressful for everyone. Here are some techniques to remember the next time you find yourself in a stressful situation:

  • Take 10 deep breaths – Why? According to Dr. John Mason, breathing is one of the easiest systems to control in order to relax. Make sure you are free of distractions. Close your eyes. Take 10 deep slow breaths where the exhalation is longer than each inhalation. As you breathe, make sure your abdomen fills up like a balloon when you inhale and sinks in when you exhale. Soon you will feel more relaxed and able to refocus.
  • ExerciseMake a regular exercise schedule that is realistic and follow it. It may seem cumbersome at first, but as you get through those tiring first days it will surely and quickly become part of your daily routine. Exercises promote the release of endorphins into our bodies. These endorphins are hormones help us attain the state of well-being and happiness.
  • Keep a Stress Journal – Monitor the things that cause you stress in a stress journal. Note down what events cause you stress, how you have or will cope with them. Initially, you may notice that the way you deal with things is not particularly effective. As you review each situation and identify your reactions, you can find the best ways to manage stress.
  • Be Realistic in Expectations – Do not expect everyone to act and behave the way you do.  Individuality is an important value in our society. You will always encounter conflicts and handling them shouldn’t always be a pain. Be ready to make mutual compromises in conflicts so that they may pass by without causing prolonged stress.
